Silver Chains FAQs
It means the metal is 92.5 per cent pure silver, with the rest usually copper to add strength. Pure silver is too soft for jewellery that’s worn daily, and 925 is the recognised standard for silver jewellery, often stamped near the clasp.
Tarnish is a reaction with air and moisture, so store the chain in a sealed pouch or box away from bathrooms and keep it away from perfume and hairspray. Wearing it regularly slows tarnish, and a silver polishing cloth brings back the shine in seconds.
Around 16 inches sits at the base of the neck. 18 inches falls just below the collarbone and suits most people. 20 inches or longer sits lower and layers well. If you plan to add a pendant, choose the length where you want it to hang.
It’s best not to. Water, soap and shampoo speed up tarnish and can leave a film that dulls the finish, and chlorine in pools and hot tubs can damage silver. Take it off before showering or swimming and put it back on once dry.
